The Ekkian Indigenous Centre Naming Ceremony

April 12, 2022

We are so proud to name the Ekkian Indigenous Centre, located in the CBU Students' Union building, in honour of Stephen Augustine. The centre is named after Stephen's Mi'kmaq name - Ekkian.

Stephen Augustine has served as Hereditary Chief on the Mi’kmaq Grand Council, as Associate Vice-President of Indigenous Affairs at Cape Breton University, but most importantly, he has served as a mentor and a role model for our students. Stephen leads with respect, and through his kindness and wisdom, he has provided support and guidance to countless students over the years.

The naming of our new Ekkian Indigenous Centre represents the pinnacle of our efforts this year to amplify the voices of Indigenous students, educate the student body on Indigenous perspectives, and create a welcoming space in the Students’ Union building for Indigenous students.

Thank you for joining us in honouring and celebrating Mr. Augustine.
