Canadian Health & Dental Plan
All Canadian students enrolled in 9 credits or more by September 13, 2024 (add/drop date-subject to change annually), are automatically enrolled in the CBU Students' Union's Campus Trust health and dental plans. Coverage is effective from September 1st to August 31st annually.
Our current provider is the Campus Trust, and the cost of the health plan is $200, and the dental plan is $130 (these rates may change annually).
Students who have their own coverage through an employer, a parent, or sponsored by and Indigenous Band Council, are eligible to opt-out of (drop) the CBU Students' Union plan. The opt-out process is open now until Friday, September 13, 2024.
To access the opt-out portal, simply visit www.studentbenefits.ca and select Cape Breton University from the list of schools. The option to opt-out is located in the menu. Complete all requested sections in the opt-out form, attach proof of coverage (a photo of your insurance card, letter from insurance company, or Indigenous status card), select the "waive your benefits" box, and hit submit. Each student who completes an opt-out prior to the opt-out deadline will receive an email confirmation. Please ensure you save this in the event of an error. Credits will be applied to student account in late September. Students are required to opt-out annually before the add/drop date in September.
For students wishing to remain on the plan, benefit cards can be accessed in September, by visiting www.cbusu.drawbridge.ca. Be sure to register on the site to confirm your identity. You'll then have access to your benefit cards, the ability to submit claims, and track your usage throughout the year.
Any student wishing to add family coverage can stop by the Students' Union reception desk prior to September 13th to fill out an opt-in form and make payment to add dependants (Additional cost is required to add dependants) . Dependants include spouse, common law partner (living together for one year), and/or children that live with you on a full-time basis, who are under the age of 21 and depend on you for support while living in a parent-child relationship. Also, children under the age of 25 who are in full-time attendance at an accredited institution, are eligible for coverage with the submission of documentation yearly. Plan members and dependants must be under the age of 70 to be eligible for coverage.
Undergraduate students enrolled in less than 9 credits are also eligible for coverage. If you are interested in joining the plan, please stop by the Students' Union reception desk prior to September 13th to complete an opt-in form and make payment directly to the Students' Union office. New students arriving in January are also eligible for coverage and must enrol prior to January 17, 2025.
Master's students are eligible for coverage but must enroll as a member of the Students' Union first before opting-in to the benefits plan. All fees to enroll must be paid at the Students' Union office.
International students are not eligible for the Campus Trust plan, and are encouraged to visit the International Student Office located in the Student Affairs Department for more information on the Guard Me plan.
